The Brown Sensory Kitchen

Play Inspiration, Planning & Printable Resources

One colour. So many possibilities. The Brown Sensory Kitchen takes a simple colour thread and turns it into rich, open-ended provision that can stay, evolve and actually be played with. Using natural materials, everyday objects and things you may already have — from pinecones, wood and leaves to sand, bowls, scoops and water — children are free to scoop, fill, tip, collect, transport, mix, sort, investigate and create. There’s no finished product and no one way to play.     Brown Sensory Kitchen Booklet

Rather than setting up one activity, the booklet shows how a whole sensory space can be connected through one colour. Different materials provide opportunities to sift, grip, fill, empty, transfer and compare, while the brown thread introduces children to the idea that a colour can have many different shades. Words such as oat, honey, cinnamon, chestnut, cocoa and espresso give adults richer language to introduce naturally through play, without expecting children to learn or remember colour names.     Brown Sensory Kitchen Booklet     Brown Sensory Kitchen Booklet

There’s a lot of learning hiding in something very simple. Grasping, tonging and scooping support fine motor development; filling, sorting, counting and comparing introduce early maths; natural materials encourage children to explore texture, seasonal change, colour and cause and effect; and the freedom to combine resources supports communication, creativity and independence.     Brown Sensory Kitchen Booklet

The booklet also helps practitioners look beyond the “activity” and notice the patterns within children’s play, including transporting, containing, trajectory, positioning, rotation and transformation schemas. Rather than creating something separate for every schema, the open-ended provision gives children space to show you what they are already interested in doing.     Brown Sensory Kitchen Booklet

Most importantly, this isn’t a shopping list or a set-up to copy exactly. Use the resources you already have, leave out what doesn’t suit your children and allow the provision to change as their interests develop. Notice. Explore. Wonder. Play.     Brown Sensory Kitchen Booklet

Also included are Brown Thread printable resources, including colour inspiration exploring six shades of brown and an Autumn Treasures search-and-discovery card to extend the play beyond the sensory kitchen.
