Community Walk: Invitation to Play
Community Walk: Invitation to Play (Digital Download)
Some of the richest learning doesn't happen within four walls. It happens while walking hand in hand, noticing the world, greeting familiar faces and discovering that every community has its own stories to tell.
Community Walk is a thoughtfully designed invitation to play that encourages children to explore their local environment with curiosity, confidence and a sense of belonging. From spotting road signs and listening to everyday sounds to waving at neighbours and discovering places that matter to them, children develop meaningful connections with the world around them through real life experiences.
Created for babies, toddlers and preschool children, this resource supports practitioners in turning an everyday walk into a rich learning opportunity, filled with conversation, exploration and purposeful observation.
Inside this digital download you will find:
• A detailed overview explaining the purpose and learning behind the invitation• Learning opportunities linked to communication and language, personal, social and emotional development, understanding the world, mathematics and physical development• Practical guidance for planning engaging, child led community walks• Differentiation guidance from approximately 9 months to 5 years, with adult role prompts for every developmental stage• Inclusion and accessibility adaptations to ensure every child can participate meaningfully• Observation prompts, possible next steps and reflective questions to support assessment in the moment• Rich vocabulary linked to people, places, journeys and the local environment, alongside natural adult language prompts• Eight beautifully designed, large format vocabulary flashcards, perfect for taking on walks or using within continuous provision before and after your outing• A realistic example observation to support professional reflection and future planning
Rather than simply taking children out for fresh air, Community Walk encourages practitioners to see every journey as an opportunity for learning. Children may notice house numbers, compare different vehicles, talk about where people work, observe seasonal changes, greet members of their community or collect natural treasures to continue their exploration back at the setting. Every walk becomes an opportunity to build language, confidence, curiosity and a genuine sense of belonging.
Like every resource from The Early Years Edit, this is not a checklist or a planned route to follow. It is a carefully created, pedagogy led resource that helps practitioners recognise the learning beneath everyday experiences while encouraging children to become confident explorers of the communities they are part of.
