Dinosaur Café Sensory Kitchen: Invitation to Play
Dinosaur Café Sensory Kitchen
Play Invitation, Planning & Printable Resources
Where prehistoric play meets everyday kitchen exploration. The Dinosaur Café Sensory Kitchen is an open-ended invitation for children to mix, pour, scoop, create and imagine, whether they become café owners, bakers, potion makers, dinosaur experts or simply spend their time investigating the materials in front of them. There’s no dinosaur cake they need to recreate and no set way the café should be used — the value is in what children choose to do with it. Dino Café Sensory Kitchen
Using simple resources such as dinosaur figures, bowls, scoops, jugs, scales, sensory mixtures, natural loose parts and everyday kitchen utensils, children can scoop, stir, pour, weigh, stack, decorate, transport and combine. You don’t need to recreate the photographs or buy a whole new collection of resources either. Start with what you already have and create possibilities for play. Dino Café Sensory Kitchen
There’s so much learning woven naturally into the invitation. Filling and weighing introduces capacity, quantity, size, weight, counting and comparison; scooping, squeezing and stirring develops coordination and hand control; shared café play creates opportunities for communication, collaboration, independence and turn-taking; while potions and sensory mixtures encourage investigation, cause and effect and imaginative thinking. Rather than giving you another activity to set up tomorrow, the booklet focuses on following the play. Notice what children repeatedly return to, give them time to explore it and then extend from what you actually see. If they love pouring, offer different vessels. If they begin weighing, introduce new ingredients. If dinosaurs become characters, allow the storytelling to grow. The provision can stay and evolve rather than disappearing after one session. The resource also includes two illustrated printable invitations: Dinosaur Cake Making, encouraging children to scoop, stack, frost and decorate, and Dinosaur Roar Potion, inviting them to mix, pour, stir and ROAAARR! These can be added straight into the sensory kitchen or used to inspire smaller standalone play invitations. Dino Café Sensory Kitchen
Set the invitation. Notice the play. Follow where it leads.
