Early Maths Comparison Flash Cards
Early Maths Comparison Cards
Maths in the early years doesn’t need to look like a maths activity.
These Comparison Cards are designed to introduce some of those really important early mathematical concepts through things children can actually see, hold, move, collect and compare.
The pack includes six simple visual prompts exploring long and short, tall and short, more and less, big and small, full and empty, and heavy and light.
Pop a card beside a basket of loose parts, take them outdoors, add them to your construction area or simply choose one before heading off on a walk. Can you find something longer? Which basket has more? What could we put inside to make this one full? Which do you think will feel heavier?
There’s no worksheet and no need for a planned “maths lesson”. The cards are there to prompt noticing, exploring, talking and thinking, helping children begin to understand mathematical language through real experiences.
Use them to support:
Early mathematical language • comparison • size • length • quantity • capacity • weight • problem solving • reasoning
Print, laminate and use them again and again across your provision. Keep them accessible, follow the child’s curiosity and see where the conversation goes.
