Early Maths Position Cards
Early Maths Position Cards
Positional language is one of those things children learn best by actually doing it, not by looking at pictures on a worksheet.
These Position Cards are simple prompts designed to be picked up and used with whatever you already have around you. A pebble on top of a log, an animal underneath a bridge, a conker inside a basket or a stick pushed through a wooden ring. The resource explores on top, under, next to, inside, through and around, while introducing alternative vocabulary such as above, beneath, beside, within and surround.
Use them with loose parts, construction, small world, treasure baskets or natural finds, take them into the garden or even bring them along on a walk. They work just as well as a quick adult led prompt as they do left within the provision for children to discover independently.
They support early mathematical thinking, spatial awareness, listening and understanding, problem solving and vocabulary, but without turning it into a formal maths activity.
