Harvest Bakery: Invitation to Play
Harvest Bakery
Play Invitation, Planning & Printable Resources
Step into a warm, cosy Harvest Bakery, where children can mix, measure, knead, sift, weigh and create through open-ended autumn play. Inspired by the changing season and the abundance of harvest, this invitation combines sensory exploration, early maths, communication and imaginative play, giving children the freedom to create their own recipes, serve friends and discover how familiar baking experiences can become rich opportunities for learning. Harvest Bakery
From scooping flour and rolling dough to weighing ingredients, filling containers and setting up their own bakery shop, there are so many possibilities within one invitation. Children can explore counting, capacity, weight, comparison and sequencing, strengthen fine motor skills through kneading and using tools, develop new vocabulary and build confidence through shared role play. The planning also includes adaptations from 9–12 months through to 4–5 years, helping practitioners make the same invitation meaningful across different stages of the EYFS. Harvest Bakery
The resource goes beyond simply showing you what to put in the tray. It includes guidance for observing the play, inclusion and adaptations, possible next steps and key vocabulary, with words such as knead, measure, sift, spice, texture, harvest and utensils explored in meaningful context. There are also ideas for extending children’s interests into real baking, weighing investigations and wider conversations about harvest and where food comes from. Harvest Bakery
Included are beautifully illustrated Harvest Bakery vocabulary and action cards, featuring words such as harvest, bakery, dough, measure, mix, knead, sift and weigh, ready to add directly to the play space. There’s also an observation and possible next steps page to help practitioners capture what actually happened and use children’s play to decide where to go next. Harvest Bakery
