Mark Making Prompt Flash Cards
Mark Making Prompt Cards
Mark making doesn’t need to begin with worksheets, tracing letters or sitting at a table. Before children are ready to write, they need plenty of opportunities to explore what their hands can actually do.
These Mark Making Prompt Cards are designed to sit alongside the provision and give children a simple visual starting point without turning their play into a prescribed activity. The six cards explore dots, lines, zig zags, circles, swirls and prints, with simple language such as tap, dab, twist, curl, press and lift to support the movements children are making.
Use them with paint and crayons, but don’t stop there. Try chalk outdoors, sticks in mud, fingers through foam, brushes and water, rollers, dabbers, natural objects, playdough tools or anything else that leaves a mark.
They’re a lovely way to support early writing movements, hand eye coordination, fine and gross motor development, creativity and descriptive language while keeping mark making playful and accessible.
Print them, laminate them and pop them wherever the mark making happens.
