Notice. Explore. Change. Connect. 🍂

Discover the little wonders of autumn with The Red Thread, a thoughtful and inclusive curriculum extension from The Early Years Edit.

Created to complement our Harvest, Light & Little Wonders Curriculum Framework, this beautifully illustrated resource encourages practitioners to slow down, follow children's curiosity and deepen everyday learning through seasonal observation, exploration and meaningful connections.

From rich red apples and changing autumn leaves to golden sunlight, harvest discoveries and the gentle rhythms of nature, The Red Thread invites children to explore the changing world around them through familiar, meaningful experiences.

This isn't another theme to plan or more activities to complete. It's a gentle invitation to revisit familiar experiences, notice seasonal changes and allow children's natural curiosity to lead the way.

Inclusion at the Heart

At The Early Years Edit, inclusion isn't an additional activity or an afterthought. It is woven through everything we create.

Each of the four practical play extensions includes SEND-friendly adaptations, adult guidance and achievable ways to support children with differing communication, sensory, physical and developmental needs.

Children can participate through observation, touch, movement, gestures, visual communication or spoken language, without pressure to respond, complete activities or engage in one particular way.

The adult language prompts complement the ShREC approach – Share attention, Respond, Expand and Conversation, encouraging responsive interactions, shared curiosity and opportunities for deeper learning.

The resource also includes safety guidance for age-appropriate exploration, particularly when supporting babies and younger children with natural autumn materials.

A Little Inspiration...

Place a small selection of large, safe red autumn treasures into an existing sensory area. Add familiar apples, fabric leaves or photographs of changing trees.

Notice the differences between apples. Which looks darker? Which feels smoother? What might happen if we return to the same apple tomorrow?

Take a moment to revisit a familiar tree throughout autumn. Observe the changing colours, falling leaves and differences in the natural environment.

Introduce the red shade cards to encourage children to compare the colours they discover, without expecting them to identify or name every shade correctly.

There is no need for elaborate setups, complicated explanations or perfectly presented activities.

Choose a few simple enhancements, revisit them regularly and allow children to lead.
