What Is ShREC?
The ShREC approach encourages practitioners to develop high-quality interactions through four simple principles:
⭐ Sh – Share Attention: Notice what the child is interested in and join their focus.
⭐ R – Respond: Acknowledge and respond to the child's actions, ideas, gestures or communication.
⭐ E – Expand: Introduce meaningful vocabulary, model language and gently extend the child's thinking.
⭐ C – Conversation: Create opportunities for back-and-forth interactions, allowing children time and space to contribute.
These cards translate the approach into practical examples for everyday Reception provision, helping practitioners move beyond simply asking questions and towards more responsive, meaningful conversations.
Supporting Learning Through Play
These practitioner prompt cards support:
🌿 Communication & Language – Developing vocabulary, listening, understanding and meaningful interactions.
🌿 Personal, Social & Emotional Development – Building positive relationships, confidence and a sense of belonging.
🌿 Literacy – Supporting storytelling, early writing, comprehension and purposeful communication.
🌿 Mathematics – Encouraging mathematical language, comparison, reasoning and problem-solving.
🌿 Understanding the World – Developing curiosity, observation and investigative conversations.
🌿 Expressive Arts & Design – Supporting imagination, creativity and children's individual ideas.
Inclusion at the Heart
At The Early Years Edit, inclusion is woven through everything we create.
These ShREC cards encourage practitioners to recognise that communication takes many forms. Children may respond through spoken language, gestures, facial expressions, movement, actions, mark making or shared attention.
The prompts are designed to support responsive, child-led interactions, allowing practitioners to adapt their language, pace and expectations to meet individual communication and developmental needs.
They are particularly useful for supporting inclusive practice, children with SEND, emerging communicators and children who benefit from additional time to process and respond.
We model language, follow children's interests and create opportunities for connection without demanding a verbal response.
A Little Inspiration...
Print and laminate the cards, then attach your most frequently used prompts to a lanyard or keep them together on a small ring for easy access throughout the day.
Choose the card that corresponds with your provision area and use it as a gentle reminder during play.
Perhaps a child is carefully building a tower. Rather than immediately asking what they're making, pause and notice their actions.
Respond to their ideas, introduce a little positional vocabulary and leave space for the conversation to develop naturally.
Small changes in adult interactions can create meaningful opportunities for communication, connection and deeper learning.
