Winter Woodland Friends | Numbers 1–10 Printable
A little woodland magic for your winter maths provision!
Meet our Winter Woodland Friends, a beautiful collection of ten woodland animals, each carrying a number from 1–10 and ready to become part of your early maths invitations.
Designed in The Early Years Edit's signature soft watercolour style, this collection features a deer, rabbit, fox, hedgehog, squirrel, badger, owl, mouse, pine marten and hare. With gentle winter details, cosy scarves and beautifully simple illustrations, these woodland friends are perfect for creating calm, inviting learning opportunities throughout the winter months.
We've deliberately kept the designs simple, allowing the illustrations to capture children's interest whilst keeping the focus on the numbers themselves. Whether displayed in your maths area, incorporated into a woodland tuff tray or cut out for hands-on exploration, these little friends offer endless opportunities for learning through play.
How could you use them?
Woodland counting: Pair each animal with the corresponding quantity of natural loose parts, such as pinecones, wooden discs, acorns or pebbles.
Number ordering: Encourage children to arrange their woodland friends from 1–10, identifying missing numbers and exploring number sequences.
Winter woodland tuff trays: Create a cosy woodland scene with artificial snow, logs, trees and miniature animals, inviting children to explore numbers through imaginative play.
Number hunts: Hide the animals around your setting or outdoor provision for children to discover, identify and collect.
Playdough invitations: Encourage children to create the correct number of berries, woodland treats or snowballs for each animal.
Matching and sorting: Pair the animals with numeral cards, ten frames, counting objects or corresponding quantities.
Storytelling and small world play: Use the woodland characters to inspire stories, conversations and mathematical problem-solving.

A little note from The Early Years Edit
We love resources that can be used in more than one way. These woodland friends don't need an elaborate activity or hours of preparation to become meaningful learning opportunities. Sometimes a basket of pinecones, a handful of wooden numbers and a curious child are all you need.
Print, cut out and laminate your woodland friends to enjoy them throughout winter and beyond, adapting the invitations as children's interests, confidence and understanding develop.
Digital download only. No physical product will be posted. Loose parts and additional play resources are not included.
